He was wounded in action and captured at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was listed as killed at Sharpsburg, but is found on a register of prisoners of war from the Office of the (Federal) Provost Marshal in Washington, DC 20 April 1865, with transportation provided for Murphy to New York City.
