He enlisted as Private, Company H, 5th Louisiana Infantry on 30 April 1861 in New Orleans. He was promoted 3rd Corporal on 10 December 1861 and to Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action and captured at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was listed as killed at Sharpsburg, but is found on a register of prisoners of war from the Office of the (Federal) Provost Marshal in Washington, DC 20 April 1865, with transportation provided for Murphy to New York City.
