Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 16 year old living with his parents and 2 younger siblings on the family farm at Kialijah (?) in Tallapoosa County, AL. He enlisted at Loachapoka in Lee County, AL as a Private in Company A, 47th Alabama Infantry on 20 March 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, initially thought to have been wounded and taken prisoner there, later listed as missing.

He was brother-in-law of Charles G. Hendix, also in Company A of the 4th Alabama and killed at Sharpsburg. His brother Adam was a Corporal in Company A and may have been at Sharpsburg.
