An unmarried 26 year old farmer at Guntersville, he enlisted there as First Sergeant, Company K, 9th Alabama Infantry on 19 May 1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and promoted to Captain, dates not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

His service from the State of Alabama,1 source also of his picture, from a post-war portrait (wearing First Sergeant's stripes) based on a photograph. Personal details from family genealogists, at least one of whom has him as John Franklin Rayburn. His gravesite is on Findagrave. He also has a memorial (cenotaph) in Guntersville City Cemetery.
