Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a teacher in a public school living with the Rev. J. J. Bullington and his family at Sylacauga in Talladega County, AL. He enrolled on 29 March 1861 at Selma, AL and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant of Company C, 7th Alabama Infantry. He served with them to at least December 1861, then was appointed Captain of Company H, 48th Alabama Infantry on 27 May 1862. He was sick in a hospital in Charlottesville, VA from 26 July to August 7, then returned to his company.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His brother William P Golightly (1833-1881), then 2nd Lieutenant of Company H, filed a claim for Robert's final pay of $203.66 in November 1862 and again in January 1863. It may have finally been paid in September 1864.

Another brother, Private Thomas Golightly, was also killed at Sharpsburg.
