An unmarried 30 year old teacher from Goline, AL, he mustered as First Sergeant, Company G, 15th Alabama Infantry on 3 July 1861 at Abbeville, AL. He was wounded at Hazel River, VA on 23 August 1862 and returned to duty at Harpers Ferry, VA on 13 September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was "shot through the head and killed instantly" in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
