He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again at Gettysburg, PA and captured there on 5 July 1863. He was paroled at Point Lookout, MD on 18 February 1865 and received at Boulware & Cox's Wharves, James River, VA on 21 February. He's listed as being discharged on 5 April 1865. He was paroled (as J.P. Pilgreene) in June 1865 in Selma, AL.
