Before Sharpsburg

An unmarried 18 year old farmer in Rockford, AL, he enlisted as Private, Company H, 13th Alabama Infantry on 2 July 1861 in Coosa County, AL. He was wounded at Seven Pines, VA on 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, in the head at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July and captured there on 3 July 1863 -

shot in burr of ear and hearing totally destroyed and paralyzed right side of face and partially destroyed use of right eye. Can't shut right eye. Practically lost right eye from mini ball in right ear.
He was exchanged on 1 November 1863.
