A 32 year old deputy sheriff in Winona, MN, he was elected First Lieutenant, Company K, First Minnesota Infantry on 29 April 1861. He was promoted to Captain on 15 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was killed by gunshot through the body in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
