Age 32, he enlisted on 30 June 1861 in New York City and and mustered as Private, Company A, First New York Cavalry on 30 July. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 November and Sergeant in February 1862.

He was mortally wounded near Sharpsburg on 20 (?) September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds at a hospital in Chambersburg, PA on 12 October 1862.
