Age 35, he enlisted on 22 April 1861 in New York City and mustered as Sergeant, Company B, 4th New York Infantry on 9 May. He was appointed First (Orderly) Sergeant on 15 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was buried in Brooklyn on 29 November 1862.
