From Spencer, IN, he mustered as Musician in the 14th Indiana Infantry on 7 June 1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company H on 15 September 1861 and promoted to First Lieutenant on 13 May 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
