He mustered as Private, Company A, 19th Indiana Infantry on 24 February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by gunshot to the arm in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 19 and 20 September, then transferred to Baltimore and on to Washington, DC. He died of his wounds at a hospital there on 16 October 1862.
