From Owen County, IN, he mustered as Private, Company I, 19th Indiana Infantry on 29 July 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the left leg in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the German Reformed Church hospital in Frederick, MD from 1 October to 24 January 1863, when he was transferred to the US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick. He died of wounds there on 19 February 1863.
