He enlisted in New Hanover County, NC and mustered as Private, Company K, 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 28 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 18 (or 17) September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was captured in action at Mine Run, VA about 1 December 1863 and held at the Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC until transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 3 February 1864. He was paroled 18 September 1864 and exchanged to return to duty on 22 September at Varina, VA with no further military record found.
