Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 33 year old painter living with his father, a printer, in Thomaston, Knox County, Maine. He gave his residence as Lynn, Massachusetts when he enlisted as a Private in Company D, 8th Massachusetts Infantry on 30 April 1861 for 3 months. He mustered out with them in Boston on 1 August and almost immediately reenlisted. He mustered as Corporal, Company H, 20th Massachusetts Infantry on 24 August 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant in July or August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
