Age 23, from Saco, he mustered as Private, Company C, 5th Maine Infantry on 24 June 1861. He was promoted to 4th Sergeant on 26 August 1862 and appointed First Sergeant in June 1862.

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
