He mustered as Private in Company D, First Texas Infantry on 6 June 1861 in New Orleans. He was promoted to 4th Sergeant in May 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was wounded again, at Chickamauga, GA on 19 September 1863.
