He mustered as Sergeant, Company A, 2nd Regiment Texas Mounted Rifles (later Second Texas Cavalry) in April 1861. After service with them in Trans-Mississippi Department, he transferred into Company I, First Texas Infantry in August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
