From Oglethorpe County, he enlisted in Company K, 6th Georgia Infantry on 1 December 1861 at Yorktown, VA.

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 at age 19.

His death and age from a family bible and his picture from an ambrotype at the Keenan Research Center, Atlanta History Center, both published in the Atlanta Historical Society's Neat Pieces: The Plain-style Furniture of Nineteenth-century Georgia (2006). A collection of 4 of his wartime letters are in the Georgia Archives in UDC Bound Typescripts, Vol. 6, pp. 371-383.
