One of the three Butlers (John F., J.D., William R.) from Baldwin County, he mustered as Private, Company H, 4th Georgia Infantry on 26 April 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the leg in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
John F. Butler was wounded at Ft. Steadman, VA in March 1865 and was home on furlough at the end of the war.
J.D. has no record after enlistment.
William R. Butler was promoted to Corporal but was killed in action at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863.
