Before Antietam

Age 19, he enlisted in the 2nd Company, Minnesota Sharpshooters at Stillwater, MN on 24 February 1862. He was captured at Savage's Station, VA on 29 June 1862 and exchanged to return to duty, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by gunshot to the arm in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD from 22 to 29 September 1862, then transferred, location not given. He was discharged for disability on 12 June 1863. He enlisted again, in Company B, Brackett's Battalion, Minnesota Cavalry on 30 April 1864 with service in the Dakota Territory, and mustered out on 1 June 1866.
