Before Antietam

Age 20, he enlisted in the 2nd Company, Minnesota Sharpshooters as Corporal on 20 December 1861. He was promoted to First Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was commissioned First Lieutenant, date not given, but probably after the resignation of Lt. Jones on 26 May 1863. He was captured at Ream's Station, VA on 25 August 1864 and held at Libby, Salisbury, and Danville prisons in Virginia and North Carolina. He was released about February 1865 and mustered out of service on 3 March 1865.

After the War

He lived in Santa Cruz, CA from 1889, where he was a carpenter and cabinetmaker.
