He enlisted as Private, 2nd Company, Minnesota Sharpshooters on 20 January 1862 at St. Paul, age 19.

He was severely wounded in the neck in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He was in a hospital in Frederick, MD in December 1862 and was discharged for disability, date not given.
