Before Sharpsburg

Found in 1860 Grimes County census in Anderson P.O.; age 25; born NC; clerk; living in household of possible brother T. H. and Mary C. Atkinson. He enlisted 19 July 1861 at Harrisburg, Texas as 3rd Corporal in Company G, 4th Texas Infantry. He was appointed 2nd Corporal in the Winter of 1861-62, and promoted to First Sergeant on 12 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was not with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September but was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was elected 3rd Lieutenant on 4 February 1863. He was wounded in action at Chickamauga 19 September 1863, and again, in the thigh, at White Oak Swamp on 16 August 1864. He was paroled at Appomattox on 12 Apr 1865.
