A farmer from Oxford, MS, he enlisted in Company G, 11th Mississippi Infantry at Oxford on 26 April 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, by gunshot to the right thigh, and captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. He was treated at the US 12th Corps Hospital and exchanged at the DeCamp hospital there on 8 September 1863. He was discharged shortly after to take a commission as First Lieutenant, Company I, 5th Mississippi Cavalry and he surrendered with them at Meridian, MS on 4 May 1865.
