An 18 year old student, he enlisted in Company E, 11th Mississippi Infantry on 26 April 1861 in Crawfordsville.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, by gunshots to the mouth and chest at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and was captured there. He was treated at the US Army Camp Letterman hospital in Gettysburg into August, and was exchanged from the West's Buildings hospital in Baltimore, MD on 15 (or 17) November 1863.
