Before Antietam

He was commissioned First Lieutenant of the First Virginia (Union) Cavalry mustered on 27 September 1861. In January 1862 he and his Company transferred as "H" to the First Maryland Cavalry and he was promoted Captain on 25 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was at Harpers Ferry in September 1862, and helped defend Maryland Heights on the 12th-13th.

The rest of the War

He was discharged on 1 April 1864.
