Before Antietam
He enlisted as Private, Company H, First Virginia (Union) Cavalry on 3 December 1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, date not given. In January 1862 he transferred with his Company to the First Maryland Cavalry and was promoted to First Lieutenant on 25 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded on Maryland Heights near Harpers Ferry on 13 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of his wounds on 26 October 1862.
