Before Antietam
He enlisted as Private, Company I, First Virginia (Union) Cavalry on 3 September 1861 and was promoed to Sergeant the same day. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, date not given. In January 1862 he transferred with his Company to the First Maryland Cavalry.
On the Campaign
He was severely wounded at Harpers Ferry on 13 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was commissioned First Lieutenant on 28 August 1863 and Captain on 29 October 1864. He was assigned as acting Assistant Adjutant General for Evan's Brigade, Army of the James, dates not given. He mustered out with the regiment, date not given.
