Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted as Private, (first) Company G, 3rd North Carolina Artillery (40th Regiment State Troops) in Edgecombe County on 1 March 1862.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was administratively transferred to the Rowan Artillery (Co. D, First NC Light Artillery/10th Regt. State Troops) after Sharpsburg when the Battery was disbanded, but died of wounds on 22 September 1862, before the transfer was effective.
