Age 23, from Iredell County, he enlisted as 3rd Sergeant, Company C, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 7 June 1861 at Statesville. He was detailed as a "policeman" from December 1861 to February 1862, place not given.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in Maryland and was cited by General D.H. Hill for his conduct at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862:

Sergts. John Troutman and J. W. Shinn ... of this [4th North Carolina] regiment, were greatly distinguished for their courage.

The rest of the War

He was wounded at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862, his "left foot bruised by a shell," and died at home in Iredell County, NC on 6 February 1863.
