Age 25, from Wilson County, he enlisted as Private, Company F, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 9 September 1861 at Camp Pickens in Manassas, VA. He was promoted to Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in Maryland and was cited by General D.H. Hill for his conduct at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862:

Corpls. J. A. Cowan and H. H. Barnes, and Private J. D. Barton, of this [the 4th North Carolina] regiment, were greatly distinguished for their courage.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Sergeant on 14 March 1863, but he was mortally wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and died 4 days later.
