Age 27, from Wayne County, he enlisted as a Private in Captain Junius B Whitaker's Company, 9th Regiment North Carolina Volunteers on 8 June 1861 in Goldsboro. The Company transferred to become "D" of the 4th North Carolina Infantry on 28 June 1861 when they mustered for Confederate service.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
