Before Antietam

He was commissioned First Lieutenant in the 11th United States Infantry 14 May 1861. He was honored by brevet to Captain for his actions on the Peninsular Campaign on 3 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company B, 11th US Infantry on the Maryland Campaign.

The rest of the War

He received another brevet, to Major for gallantry at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863 and was promoted to Captain on 6 January 1864.

After the War

He remained in the Regular Army and transferred to the 16th US Infantry on 14 April 1869. He was appointed Major of the 13th US Infantry on 28 June 1885.
