Listed on 1860 Grimes County census in Anderson P.O.; age 16; born GA; son of John and Ann Kelly. He enlisted 19 July 1861 at Harrisburg, Texas as Private in Company G. He was wounded in the arm in action at Gaines' Mill 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863, and exchanged 3 March 1864. He was wounded yet again, in the abdomen, at Darbytown Road (near Richmond, Virginia) on 7 October 1864 and hospitalized into the Fall of 1864. He was paroled at Appomattox on 12 April 1865.
