An 18 year old farmer, he enlisted on 16 September 1861 in Erie, PA and mustered into service as Private, Company H, 111th Pennsylvania Infantry on 18 December 1861.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Corporal on 22 March 1864 and was wounded at Dallas, GA on 25 May 1864. He mustered out with his Company on 19 July 1865.
