A 40 year old laborer, he enlisted on 30 September 1861 in Erie, PA and mustered into service as Private, Company H, 111th Pennsylvania Infantry on 2 November 1861.

He was in action with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He was discharged on a Surgeon's Certificate on 2 March 1863.
