A 21 year old farmer, he enlisted on 16 December 1861 in Erie, PA and mustered into service as Private, Company H, 111th Pennsylvania Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was present in action with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He reenlisted on 19 December 1863 and was afterward on detached duty. He mustered out with his Company on 19 July 1865.
