Before Sharpsburg

Age 21, he enlisted on 10 May 1861 as Private, Company B, 2nd Mississippi Infantry. He reenlisted for the War and went home with other reenlisted men of his Company in February 1862 on a 30 day furlough and to get new recruits.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was hospitalized and returned to duty. He was detailed as a scout to General Heth on 1 July 1863 and was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital for a wound on 14 July - place of wounding not given. He returned to duty on 8 August 1863.
