Before Sharpsburg
He was a 25 year old single farmer in Pine Grove when he enlisted as Private, Company D, 2nd Mississippi Infantry, date not given. He was appointed First Sergeant by April 1862 and was wounded at Gaines' Mill, VA on 27 June 1862. He was at a hospital in Richmond, AV, then returned to duty.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He wounded at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and again, severely, at the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864. He was hospitalized, then on 60 day furlough from 15 July 1864, and returned to duty in September or October. He was captured near Petersburg, VA on 2 April 1865 and held at Fort Delaware. He was released on 11 June 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance.
