Before Sharpsburg

A 19 year old farmer, he enlisted on 30 April 1861 in Iuka in Company K, 2nd Mississippi Infantry. He was wounded in May or June 1862, place not given.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded in the left arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His arm was amputated at the shoulder. He was furloughed for 60 days on 9 December 1862 and discharged for disability on 6 August 1863 due to his wound.

After the War

He spent most of his life as a farmer in Lawrence County, TN.

His service in the 2nd Mississippi from a casualty list/roster for the Campaign provided by Michael Brasher, from his research in Compiled Service Records, Company rolls, and other period sources; he's listed there as Bassel S. Shields. His gravesite is on Findagrave. At least one family genealogist has him alternately as Baswell Sneed Shields.

He married Rebecca Caroline Pennington (1841-1912) in 1872 in Lawrence County and they had at least one son, Taylor (1873-1959). After her death, Basil married the widow Nancy E Bottom Thomas (1848-1926) in 1914.
