He was wounded by gunshot to the arm and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 12 October 1862 and transferred on to Baltimore the next day.

Wound and hospital details from the Patient List.1 He is not found in the records for 6th SC Infantry as J.W. Martin. There are other Martins in that unit including J.D (Co. A), J.E. (Co. D), John H. (Co. C), and Joseph (Co. B). The only one listed in Company H is an R.A. Martin.
