Before Sharpsburg

He mustered as Private, Company B, 37th Virginia Infantry on 25 April 1861 in Glade Spring, VA. He was promoted to First Corporal about 15 August 1861. He was elected 3rd Lieutenant on 15 April 1862 and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 23 May.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was senior officer present and commanded his Company by 15 March 1863 He was captured at Spotsylvana Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and held at Fort Delaware. He was one of the "Immortal 600" officers sent to Hilton Head, SC as a "retaliatory prisoner" in August 1864, was at Fort Pulaski, GA in October, back to Hilton Head in November, and returned to Fort Delaware on 12 March 1865. He was released 16 June 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance.

After the War

He lived in Arkansas.
