Before Sharpsburg

From Washington County, he enlisted and mustered as Private, Company B, 37th Virginia Infantry on 22 April 1861 in Abingdon, VA. He was promoted to 4th Sergeant about 15 January 1862 and was 3rd Sergeant at the reorganization of April 1862. He was wounded at Cedar Run, VA on 9 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a hospital in Staunton, VA then detailed as a nurse in December 1862. He was reduce to Private in April 1863 and captured at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863. He was briefly held in Washington, DC then exchanged at City Point, VA. He returned to his unit on 31 January 1864. He was captured again, at Spotsylvania Court House, V on 12 May 1864 and in the prison at Fort Delaware. He was released 22 June 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance.
