Before Sharpsburg
An unmarried 23 year old farmer, he enlisted at Harrisburg (or Anderson), TX as a Private in Company G, 4th Texas Infantry on 19 July 1861.
On the Campaign
He was in action with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

His letters from 1861-62 to his sister Sallie are in the Blackley Family Papers in Carrier Library, James Madison University [finding aid]. Sallie's husband (James' brother-in-law) R.H. Bassett was Captain of Company G at Sharpsburg.
