Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted and mustered as Private, Company F, 37th Virginia Infantry on 25 April 1861 in Glade Spring, VA. He was promoted to Sergeant on 14 April 1862 and 2nd Sergeant on 1 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was furloughed in October and returned to duty on 15 December 1862. He was captured at Spotsylvnia Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and passed through Belle Plain, VA to the prison at Fort Delaware. He was released on 20 June 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance.

After the War

He paid property tax in Glade Spring, Washington County, VA in 1868, 1871, and 1872.
