Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted and mustered as Private, Company K, 37th Virginia Infantry on 25 September 1861 at Camp Bartow, VA (now WV) near the Greenbrier River.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty on about 15 December 1862. He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. He was briefly at Fort McHenry then held at Fort Delaware. He was transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 26 October and in the smallpox hospital there in November and December, returning to the prison on about 15 January 1864. He was sent to Boulware & Cox's Wharves, VA on 20 February 1865 and exchanged there on the 21st. He was paroled at Camp Lee, VA on 1 March 1865.
