From Smythe County, he enlisted and mustered as Private, Company K, 37th Virginia Infantry on 9 September 1862 in Frederick, MD, as a substitute for 1st Sgt. Charles F. Keller, Co. K.
On the Campaign
Just over a week later, on 17 September 1862, he was wounded in action at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and held at Fort Delaware. He was exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA on 30 September 1864, hospitalized in Richmond, VA, then furloughed on 22 October for 60 days. He was captured again, at Fort Stedman near Petersburg, VA on 25 March 1865 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD. He was released 17 June 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance.
