He enlisted and mustered as Private, Company D, 37th Virginia Infantry on 27 May 1861 in Abingdon, VA.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was furloughed home in October and returned to duty on about 15 December 1862. He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and held at Fort Delaware. He was released on 2 June 1864 after taking the oath of allegiance.
