Before Sharpsburg
A 17 year old farmer, he enlisted and mustered as Private, Company K, 37th Virginia Infantry on 9 September 1862 in Frederick, MD, as a substitute for Pvt. Robert J. Preston, Co. K.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to the Winder Division Hospital in Richmond, VA on 16 November and returned to duty on the 25th. He was wounded and captured at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863, briefly at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC, then sent to City Point, VA, where he was exchanged on 12 May. He was sick in the Episcopal hospital in Williamsburg and furloughed in July at Petersburg, VA. He was sick again in February and March 1865 and hospitalized in Richmond. He was probably captured there on 15 March and released on 26 June 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance.
